We showed the audience of 800 our radically different approach to email and collaboration – an approach that makes it possible for users to keep one foot in the Microsoft camp and also take advantage of the new generation of cost-effective tools and capabilities that are part of the open world. It was exhausting week starting Sunday with the rehearsal, culminating with our actual six minutes of fame and glory on Wednesday morning. You can see Duncan Greatwood presenting the demo by clicking here. The only thing you can’t see in the video above are the 800 people in the audience and their reaction. Needless to say, people were very positive about PostPath’s potential impact on the email and collaboration space.
The demo included showing an unmodified Outlook client and an open-source Ajax Web client from Zimbra connecting to a PostPath Server, viewing calendar free-busy information for both Exchange and PostPath hosted users. This ability to view cross-server free/busy in a mixed Linux and Windows server environment has never been possible before. One of the most interesting comments we received at the event was how this approach would future-proof IT strategies by allowing them to carry the best of both those systems forward into the future.
The other portion of the demo that received rave reviews was the email server replication and hot failover using DRBD and Linux HA – two open-source technologies built into Linux. This gives IT the ability to implement high availability without expensive proprietary technologies. DEMO attendees witnessed an unmodified Outlook desktop connected to a PostPath server continue working without disruption after power-off of the primary PostPath Server initiated hot failover to a standby server machine.
The quality and professionalism of the production of the DEMOfall Event was amazing. The experience was well choreographed from start to finish. Suffice it to say that we thoroughly enjoyed the experience both as attendees and presenters.
