Email has become the dominant communication and collaboration mechanism for organizations around the world and the current largest player is Microsoft Exchange.
Companies have invested substantially in Exchange™ and Exchange™-compatible systems. Everything from Outlook™ on the desktop, Active Directory for user management, through second and third-party applications such Blackberry Enterprise Gateway™, Goodlink Gateway™, and Sharepoint™, require Exchange™ as the email server if they are to operate fully.
Given corporations existing investments and potential need to support additional Exchange™-compatible applications in future, in many cases enterprises require any alternative email server to be "drop-in" when deployed. The new server must not require changes to desktops or infrastructure.
Similarly, to enable a smooth transition and managed migration to a new system, it is required that the new system operate seamlessly at the server-to-server level, so that during a period of co-existence users of the new system can work effectively with users who are still hosted on Exchange™.
