To restore data to the PostPath Server™, the PostPath Backup and Restore Tool must have access to the backed-up data.
Typically this is achieved by using whatever backup tool was run - Veritas Backup Exec™ in this example - and using it to restore the backed-up folder-tree to a known temporary location (the folder tree is "mounted" in this location). The PostPath tool can then browse the folder tree for the selection and restore of data.
Note that it is not necessary to restore the whole backup to a temporary location in this fashion. Unless restoring the whole server, the administrator would typically restore just a single user's data, or perhaps even a single folder within a user's data, to the temporary location for access by the PostPath tool.
In the event that the PostPath Backup and Restore is not used merely for restore, but was also used to create the backup archive, then the tool can restore directly from the backup archive to the live store - there is no need to restore part of the tree to a temporary location. To address the same point slightly differently, the PostPath Backup and Restore can browse, and if desired restore from any one of i) The live store; ii) A mounted copy of all or part of a backed up store; or iii) a backup archive that it itself created.
