Direct Attached Storage (DAS)

Direct Attached Storage is "directly" attached to the server using disk cables. Typically, the connection is made with ATA ("ordinary" IDE), SATA (high speed serial ATA), eSATA (external serial ATA, for physically independent disk housing) or SCSI.

Very often, DAS is arranged in a RAID array of "N+1" disks (RAID-5 configuration). In Linux, RAID can be delivered via software RAID or via a multi-port hardware RAID controller. If eSATA or SCSI interconnectivity is used, then it is common to place the array of disks in an external disk-array with hot-swap capability; then if a disk fails, it can be replaced, and the disks will resynchronize and allow the server to continue to run in the meantime.
